Vincent Bal

Vincent Bal is a Belgian filmmaker and illustrator born in 1971. He studied directing at the Hogeschool Sint-Lukas Brussel in which he later graduated in 1994 with the short film Tour de France.

Bal is widely known for his doodles on shadows that's been cast by everyday objects, whether if it's just a leaf or an eaten apple. He always manages a way to create fun little doodles out of them. in 2016 he began his ongoing "Shadowology" series where he challenged himself to make a shadow doodle almost every day. His main source of inspiration came from:

"Like all good things in life, it came by accident. I was working on a film script (for a film that is never made) when I noticed how the shadow of my teacup looked a bit like an elephant. I gave the shadow animal eyes and a smile and took a picture. When I shared it on social media, the reactions were really nice, so I decided to try and make one every day. That was May 2016 and I haven’t stopped since."

This started way back in 2016 when Bal was working on a new script in May 2016, when he suddenly noticed how the shadow of a teacup on his table looked like an elephant almost. He finished his image by doodling an image of an elephant and posted it onto social media where it quickly went viral.

I really liked his way of thinking and high level of creativity, where he manages to create fun little images out of shadows. Such works helped me get inspired while working on photography, where my object created a shadow and it looked like an alien. Using his idea of doodling, I doodled on a face with arms and completed it with an alien as the shadow.
